UAE Marine Life protected
Another first for Abu Dhabi - Marawah Biosphere Reserve has been designated as the first Biosphere Reserve in the UAE by UNESCO.
The Marawah Reserve has been established to protect important UAE marine life and areas of archaeological significance. Tod date over 20 sites dating back to the Stone Age, having been discovered.
Dugong - Abu Dhabi
The Marawah Reserve is around 4255 sq km and is the largest marine protected reserve in the Gulf. It protects a group of islands that lie west of Abu Dhabi. The reserve is home to 60 per cent of the second largest population of dugongs in the world.
Mangrove Abu Dhabi
Mangroves in Abu Dhabi help to make up the Emirates unique environment and provide natural habitat for Abu Dhabi marine and wild life. In addition to the Marawah Reserve a great place to see Abu Dhabi mangroves is along the west corniche. If you are lucky you will see White Egrets and Heron there too.
Abu Dhabi Marine Life Protected
In addition to the Dugongs and Mangroves the Marawah Reserve provides an im environment for Bottlenose and Humpback dolphins
Green and Hawksbill Turtles can also be found in the waters around the reserve. More than 70 species of fish and coral reefs have been identified, adding to this rich marine.
