Having a printed map of the city isn't always as helpful as it might seem. The simple fact is that there tends to be very little in the way of physical addresses. Most directions are given in terms of the nearest landmark. Believe me when I say that for every single item of furniture I had delivered to my villa in Abu Dhabi I had to draw a map to give to the store so that they can locate my property. It's just part of the way of life in Abu Dhabi.

Finding you way around Abu Dhabi

Difficulties arise because taxi cab drivers will refer to the roads by their given names (or common names), many residents/expats will use the numbers...it is the 'common' names for each road which provide a headache for those who are new to the city!

For instance one of the main arterial roads through Abu Dhabi is 'Airport Road'. However you'll not find airport rod on the map. On the map it will be shown under its official name as Sheikh Rasheed bin Saeed al Maktoum St , it is also Street 2.

Buying a Map of Abu Dhabi

Buying a map of Abu Dhabi has become a lot easier since the 'Explore' Maps became available. These can be purchased at the checkouts of lots of supermarkets, from the book shops (in Marina Mall, Al Wadha Mall, Khalidya Mall) and from All Prints bookstore which is located just behind the Baynunah Hilton hotel.

Please remember that any map you purchase may be slightly outdated due to the rapid growth of the City.
